Principal's Message

By Kate Nicholson | Posted: Wednesday April 5, 2023

This week is Holy Week in the lead up to Holy Thursday, and we remember the Last Supper and what transpired after this, Good Friday and the crucifixion, followed by the mourning and sorrow of Jesus’ death, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

This period of time in Christian history would become very significant and the turn of events that impacted Jesus’ followers strengthened and grew the early Christian church. Of course, our faith reminds us that Easter represents new life and hope. Our belief in mercy, forgiveness and fresh starts with God’s help, is paramount in Catholic education, and around New Zealand many children in Catholic schools are supported to have a fresh start with strong pastoral care wrapped around them. This is part of our mission.

Of course, Easter also signals the end of the term and the chance to unwind and spend time with those important in our lives. It has been a great term for us at Trinity and our student leaders have much planned for term two to keep energy levels up and our positive vibe continuing! One change we have had, moving into our new name, is our school celebration day. Instead of Kavanagh Day, we now have Trinity Day, and this has been aligned to sit close to Trinity Sunday which is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost and fifty days after Easter. We look forward to our Trinity Day celebration with a difference this year.

This coming term I am on sabbatical, and I leave you in the very capable hands of Mr Steve Read as Acting Principal, Ms Tricia James as Acting DP, Mrs Rachel Mortimer, AP, Mrs Liz Cameron, Pastoral Leader, and Mr Mike Waterworth as Acting AP for term two. In term two we will welcome Mr Andy Duncan as dean and teacher of year 7, Mrs Kate Mullan into year 9, and Ms Kathryn Davie into the Science department. At the same time, we thank Mrs Liz Naylor for returning to the science department for term one, and we wish Ms Jordan Bone all the best as she welcomes a new member into her family within the next couple of weeks. We also farewell Mr Adam Jones, learning assistant, who has worked in the learning support area for the last two years. Adam is heading overseas to play cricket in England for the summer and we wish him well for this great opportunity.

I will leave you with this prayer:

Triumphant Jesus,

You raised Lazarus from dead, saying
“Unbind him, let him go free.”
You too were bound and laid to rest
in a cold tomb, freshened by myrrh and aloes.

In sorrow we left you as the dead Jesus
and in wonder you returned to us as the Risen Christ.
Untied from the strips of linen,
you offered us a new-found freedom.

With this freedom we are empowered to make choices about our lifestyle and attitudes. Help us to be courageous and take those first vital steps.

Amen
