Year 13 Biology Field Trip: New Zealand Marine Studies Centre

Senior biology students attended a three day field trip to the Marine Studies Centre this week, with practical learning opportunities aplenty!

This week the Year 13 Biology Students went to the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello for a 3 day expedition.

For an exciting few days, we were able to experience an interesting opportunity to learn outside of our class in a marine science context. Working on our individual projects with half crabs living in the intertidal zone, we were able to get a first hand experience working with live animals. From looking at how the rate of feeding changed, to seeing how long it took for the crabs to find shelter, we were able to understand and appreciate their behaviour and place in the world.

A big thank you to the Marine Studies Centre staff for this fun few days of experiential learning! Also thanks to Andrew Tagg, Michael MacKenzie and Cat Kan for your assistance during this field trip. Much appreciated!
